Reflections of 2009 - A yearly ritual

2009 A. D. comes to an end in about 1 hour and 52 minutes from the moment I have started to write this blog. As a yearly ritual followed by all and indulged in by me as well, I make an attempt to write whether this calendar year was any different from the earlier years that went by or whether at this year end we hope for a better year ahead.

Around the world 2009 was no different than the other years. But some important events would make it a year worth remembering, both for the right and the wrong reasons.

The event which I would like to list first is something which happened almost at the end of the year. The Nobel peace prize. And it's not the peace prize but the recipient of the prize which makes the year interesting. Of all the people in the world involved in the peace process world wide, the Nobel Committee based in Oslo could only agree that except for Mr. Barack Obama, the world has not seen any peace effort in any human around the globe.

This reminds me of the earlier days of the Filmfare Awards where year after year the Black Lady used to become the property of a certain actor, in fact over two generations of actors, there have been two actors who have been consistently taking away the trophy, implying thereby that there was no actor who could be considered fit for the Best Actor trophy except these two mega superstars. My point here is that I seriously believe that awards are not decided on merit, but they can be only 'purchased', not earned.

I see no reason why a certain Mr. Abdus Sattar Eidhi, based in Karachi, Pakistan, a very ordinary person providing humanitarian services to humanity, alive or dead, could not be considered as one of the contenders for the award at any time in the history of Nobel prize, except for the fact that the award is not meant for the purpose which the title depicts, but it is an item of decoration for those who can afford the decoration.

I leave this issue at this, for writing anything on this serves no purpose.

The other notable event of 2009 was the recently concluded Copenhagen Conference on Global Warming. It brought to fore the difference in approach to the question of global warming and environmental pollution. The developed countries' belief that it is within their rights to expect the developing and third world countries to take steps to reduce activities that lead to pollution of the environment and at the same time, beyond the rights of the rest of the world to expect the developed countries to adhere to the standards laid down by them to prevent pollution of the environment is the most absurd, illogical and highly condemnable belief. This attitude perhaps led to the failure of the summit. Though publicly proclaimed that the summit achieved common ground, from what a layman like me can understand about the going ons at the summit, I can see it as a disaster.

On my personal front, a day before the year ends, I took an hour's assessment for certification in International Financial Reporting Standards through the ACCA. And I succeeded in the assessment. Success on the educational front has been eluding me for quite a while now and I hope that as the year ended on a positive note for me, the new year also helps me achieve my objective of clearing the exam held by the National Law School University of India.

This year gave us another 5 year term of Mr. Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister of India, which was a very positive thing to happen to India. No doubt Mr. Singh is one of the best Prime Ministers that India has ever had.

There have been many positives and an equal number of negatives in this whole year, yet, all in all, this year has been a good year, a year having three hundred and sixty five days and each day giving equal opportunities for the good and the bad. During the course of these three hundred and sixty five days the success of good over the bad and vice versa resulted in events which either became worth remembering or worth hating. In short, it is all about DESTINY.

May we all have a better year ahead. Bye bye 2009. Welcome 2010.

I am back...

To all those who have bothered to read my blog...

I am back to blogging and plan to put up a new article which I plan to write soon.

However, what intrigues me is the fact that though a few people have read my blogs, not all of them have left their comments. It is a sincere request, let me have your thoughts on what I write, otherwise, my writing something and putting it up online serves no purpose.

Treading Miles and Keeping Promises

How many miles do I still have to tread
Don’t I yearn for the woods, lovely, dark and deep

How many promises do I still have to make and keep
Don’t I have a promise for myself to keep

Was not my life full of promises to me
Was not I meant to find solace in the silence of the woods

Why then do I still have to tread?
Why then do I still have promises to keep?

Give me one just one ray of hope
That at the end there’s light
Light in the darkness of the depth where thou shall put me to lay

Make me a promise that the miles I tread, the promises I keep
Will give me peace…eternally….eternally

My Dream…

My dream of a day when I say goodbye…
Goodbye to the life that gave me all but peace
A peace so elusive that it took my life to find
A peace so necessary that I lost my life

My dream of getting the laughter back on my face
The face that was so different than the one which now says goodbye

My dream of finding myself
That ME which got lost in the life that went by
That ME which I cannot find when I stand before a mirror
That ME which was full of love, life and meaning

My dream of finding LOVE…
The love that did not become mine
That love that was so near me always
Yet…love never seemed mine

My dream of being an ideal
The ideal, full of principles, full of values
Life brought me in situations
Where values gave way to practicality
Practicalities brought me to look at
Things with a different attitude
I lost the values, the values, which defined ME

OHHHH!!! Why did I ever dream of all these things…
For the unfulfilled dreams no bring me…
To the point of no return…
I pray to God…forgive me for my sins, the sins that I did all my life..and…
The Sin that I now do
I come to thee with hope and prayer
A prayer…for fulfillment of all my dreams
Which in life I could not fulfill…
Which in death…I ask for fulfillment

Make my Death go not a waste
As my life went by
Make my Death a realization
For those who helped in failing my dreams
Make my death offer peace to those
Who wanted to see me but alive

Oh God, help me, help me in fulfilling at least this dream
For death seems more meaningful than life
I have failed in life…let me succeed…at least in Death

My dream…was not this…for sure
My dream…ends…now…now…as I close my eyes…as I move to you…Oh God

The Indian Election Circus 2009

Good Morning to all those who care to read my blog

Today is the day when the fate of India will be decided for the next five years. By saying 'next five years', I am reflecting a wish that we Indians be spared the torture of another elections, before the five year period...a mid-term poll. This wish entails the thought that we have a government led by either of the two main political parties in India viz. the Indian National Congress or the Bhartiya Janata Party. The dreadful thought of a mid-term poll is even more dreadful if there is a government at the Centre led by those who should not even be Chief Ministers or heads of even local self governments. I would here like to name one such politician in India, who if at any point in time becomes the Prime Minister, the stage would be set for sensible Indians to start avoiding paying taxes or maybe shift base from India. If it were possible and easy to shift nationalities, then probably the best way to show contempt to that politician would be to surrender Indian citizenship. That person, that notoriously corrupt politician who inspite of being involved in so many serious offences of corruption, is still giving sleepless nights to the major political parties. That politician has gone on record to state that it is a dream to become the Prime Minister, mainly on the premise of winning a majority in the State elections a few years back. If it is still difficult to identify that politician, I would not hesitate in naming her...Mayawati, the present chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Coming back to the coalition option that could rule over India over the next five years, the present scenario has two different identified coalitions viz. the UPA and the NDA. While there had been a game of musical chairs between the NDA and UPA over the last two terms, it remains to be seen whether the game still continues and the NDA takes over the chair occupied by the UPA or whether the UPA manages to retain the seat inspite of fracturing itself over the last 2 month period covering the election campaign.

The NDA, is clearly led by a party which has identified religious views, but mainly because of the fact of having in its fold parties who do not openly subscribe to these views, has been unable to implement its mischievous agendas.

The UPA on the other hand is led by the grand old Indian party which has supposedly secular views, but who on the other hand had been a facilitator to the implementation of the saffron views of the main opposition party almost two decades ago.

In effect, the presence of either of these two parties at the helm of affairs of leading the country has no significance difference vis-a-vis the situation of minorities in India. The only ironical fact is that the minorities fail to realise that they are being taken for a ride by those fringer players in Indian politics who on the one hand declare a socialistic, non-communal agenda as the base of their political existence while on the other hand unabashedly join as coalition partners of the NDA. Gone are the days when the socialists were really socialists. With people like Nitish Kumar, Chandrababu Naidu, Naveen Patnaik, Mayawati, all having the common ingredient of opportunism ingrained in their political ideology, the minorities of India could do well by refraining from identifying with these fringe players.

As far as the UPA is concerned, apart from the fact that the saffron qualities of most of the Congressmen is a hidden factor, the Congress party is plagued by the association of those types of fringe players or the regional parties, who extract their pound of flesh at every opportune situation. It has been a general trend since Independence that the minorities have been rather comfortable with the presence of the Congress Party at the governmental level at the Centre. However, because of regional priorities, the Congress Party has lost its hold over many of the States which has in turn led to its failure to win elections on its own steam. As a result, the importance of regional parties, with whom the Congress could do business at the Centre, has grown. Most of these regional parties are led by politicians who would ordinarily not fit in to leadership roles had they applied for a position of power in a Corporate scenario. It is only because the Constitution of India provides for a government of the people, for the people and by the people, that we are faced with being governed by such brand of politicians who are not even presentable in international forums.

Over the last 62 years of the existence of India, we have mainly had governments led by the Congress or where the Congress has been the major partner. There is no doubt that the brand of leaders that the Congress party has developed are not only fit to govern the country but are also presentable and acceptable at the international level. The policies of the Congress, vis-a-vis running the economic affairs of the country has also improved ever since P. V. Narasimha Rao took over as the Prime Minister. From a social leaning, the outlook of the Congress governments post Rajiv Gandhi era has been mainly progressive. Dr. Manmohan Singh has carried forward the path of growth from his days as Finance Minister under Mr. Rao to the days of his Prime Ministership. It is a different fact that he was subject to two different powers viz. his Madam and the irritating Left front.

Today, as counting is set to begin, it remains to be seen where the fate of the millions of Indians is headed to. I shall write more on it in my next blog in the course of the day.

Effect of change

Change is a phenomenon synonomous with time. With passage of time, change becomes imminent. Change is an automatic phenomenon over which a human does not have any control. He who does not accept the change, is in fact leading a life under mistaken beliefs.

Past glories cannot be a part of the present or future life, insofar as they relate to the situation prevalent then or maybe the result of a situation perceived to be different. Past glories if carried in the present and the future may result in bringing about a premature death to the process of enhancing upon or bringing further glories.
